# Create and define a new project

All new projects should be created within the platform. This allows you to capture key high-level information about the project and, most importantly, define the project type.

## Create and Define a New Project

1. Click **Projects** from the homepage to navigate to the **All Active Projects** list.
2. Click **\+ New** from the command bar to launch the **New Project** form.
3. Provide a **unique project name** based on your organisation’s naming conventions to support effective reporting.
4. Enter a **concise and meaningful description** of the project to support clear communication.
5. Select the most appropriate **Project Type** based on your organisation’s rules.
6. Select **Altus** from the **Schedule Type** dropdown to use the built‑in scheduler, or choose to link an external schedule and follow the prompts.

    > **Important:**
    > Schedules can only be created at the **project level**, not at the program or portfolio level. Progress rolls up from projects to higher levels.

7. Click **Create** to complete the initial project setup.
8. Provide further information in the **Details pane**, then click **Save**.

## Additional Field Guidance

> **Tip:**
> The project form often includes an **ROI (Return on Investment)** field.
>
> - This is typically **calculated automatically** based on values such as **Proposed Cost** and **Benefit Value**
> - It is commonly used in **Insights reports and prioritisation views**
>
> 👉 Ensure cost and benefit fields are completed to enable accurate ROI calculation.

## Configuration and Custom Fields

> **Important:**
> The project creation form may vary depending on your organisation’s configuration.

- Additional fields may be present based on governance requirements
- Some fields may be:
- - Mandatory
    - Automatically calculated
    - Derived from other data sources

👉 These configurations are typically implemented by your **administrator or implementation partner**

> **Tip:**
> If fields or behaviour differ from this guide, refer to your organisation’s internal process or guidance to ensure correct project setup.

**Tip:**
Altus does not currently provide a native option to **duplicate or clone an existing project record**.

- Each new project must be created manually
- Standard fields, structure, and configuration will be applied based on the selected **Project Type**

👉 Some organisations may have a **custom setup or automation** implemented by an administrator or implementation partner to replicate projects. If this capability is required, check your organisation’s internal processes or configuration.
