# Associate projects, programs, and portfolios to strategic goals

While you can define the relationships top down from the **strategic goals** to the **portfolio, program,** and **project**, which we collectively refer to as the **delivery initiatives,** some organisations do it from the bottom up by associating the initiative with the appropriate goals.

Here are a **few rules** to remember when **associating** or **disassociating** a benefit or a goal:

- Each initiative, whether **a project, program** or **a portfolio**, can be associated with **multiple goals** while still adhering to the rule that a specific benefit can be associated with only a single initiative.

- You will use the **Portfolio** area, if you are associating a portfolio or program with a goal, and you will use **Project** area to associate a project.

- **Goals** would be associated or disassociated using the same process using the **Goals** tab under **Strategy** within the delivery initiatives – portfolio, program, and project.

**Associate an initiative to a goal**

1. Ensure you are in a **Project** (if associating **a Project**) or **Portfolio** area (if associating **a Portfolio or Program**).

2. Select and open the appropriate **project** (or **portfolio** or **program**).

3. Select the **Goals** tab.

4. Select **\+ Add Existing Strategic Goals** to the selected initiative.

5. Search for and select the appropriate **Goal.**

6. Click **Save & Close.**

**Disassociate an initiative from a strategic goal**

1. Ensure you are in **Projects** (if associating **a Project**) or **Portfolios** (if dis-associating **a Portfolio or Program**).

2. Select and open the appropriate **project** (or **portfolio** or **program**).

3. Select the **Goals** tab.

4. Select the **Goal** you wish to disassociate.

5. Select **Remove.**

6. Click **Save & Close.**
