# Identify work using the Board view

The **Board view** in Altus provides a flexible, visual way to organise and manage project work.

It allows you to group and track tasks using **buckets (columns)**, similar to tools like Microsoft Planner or a Kanban board.

You can use this view to:

- Organise tasks based on workflow stages (e.g. To Do, In Progress, Done)
- Group work into categories (e.g. deliverables, workstreams, phases)
- Optionally structure work into **iterations such as sprints**
- Visually track progress across the project

> **Important:**
> Board view is highly flexible and can be adapted to suit different delivery approaches (Agile, Kanban, or traditional project delivery).

* * *

## Where This Is Performed

-   **Project → Tasks → Board view**

* * *

## Creating and Configuring Buckets

Buckets define how tasks are grouped and displayed on the board.

1.  Open the project
2. Navigate to **Tasks → Board view**
3.  Select **New Bucket**
4. Enter a name for the bucket

Repeat to create additional buckets as required

* * *

## Editing Buckets

- Use the **Pencil icon** to rename existing buckets
- Add or adjust buckets to suit your project approach

Examples of bucket structures:

-   Workflow-based:
-   -   To Do
    -   In Progress
    -   Complete
-   Workstream-based:
-   -   Design
    -   Build
    -   Test
-   Iteration-based (optional):
-   -   Sprint 1
    -   Sprint 2
    -   Sprint 3

* * *

## Assigning Tasks to Buckets

- Drag and drop tasks between buckets, or
- Assign a bucket when creating a new task

This allows you to:

-   Group related work
-   Track progress visually
- Reorganise work quickly as priorities change

* * *

## Using Board View for Iterative Work (e.g. Sprints)

Board view can also be used to structure work in iterations:

- Create buckets representing **time-based groupings** (e.g. sprints)
- Move tasks into the appropriate iteration
- Track progress across each group

> **Important:**
> Sprint tracking is not enforced as a standard schedule structure in Altus. This approach is a **flexible way to represent iterations visually**.

* * *

## Alternative Sprint Tracking Approaches

Depending on your organisation’s configuration:

- Tasks may be tagged using **custom fields** (e.g. Sprint field)
- Views and filters may be used to group tasks by iteration
- Additional reporting may support sprint-level tracking

👉 These configurations are typically set up by an **implementation partner or administrator** and may vary between environments.

## Key Considerations

- Board view is a **visual representation** of project work, not a replacement for the full schedule
- It is best used for:
-   -   Task grouping
    -   Progress tracking
    -   Visual management
- It can be configured differently by each project team
-   It works alongside:
-   -   Grid view
    -   Timeline/Gantt view

## Tips

- Use buckets to reflect how your team naturally thinks about work
- Keep bucket names simple and consistent
- Use drag-and-drop regularly to keep the board up to date
- Combine Board view with filters or reporting for deeper insights
- Align your approach with your organisation’s delivery method (Agile, Kanban, or hybrid)

✅ This now:

-   Frames Board as **general-purpose (not sprint-only)**
- Aligns perfectly with **Planner/Kanban mental model**
- Still acknowledges sprint usage without overcommitting
- Matches your KB tone and governance style
